An update on Emmie...
Emmie, the country bumpkin, is now a city slicker. She was adopted by a
terrific woman who lives in Arlington, VA, very near downtown DC. But don't
worry, Emmie promised before she left that she wouldn't get involved in any
questionable politics. Emmie's leg is completely healed and she enjoys
daily walks around her new neighborhood while soaking up the compliments
about how beautiful she is. Emmie reports that she may be on the next
season of America's Next Top Dog Model!
Emmie is a joy to behold.
Emmie is a female, Treeing Walker Coonhound, less than one year, 45 pounds.
Emmie came into AWL as a stray who successfully evaded Animal Control for 2 weeks and in the process, managed to break her leg. She doesn't seem to care much about the broken leg though - she romps around the yard and wrestles with her fellow canine companions with reckless abandon. The break in Emmie's leg is a bad one and requires surgery. Once healed though, she will still be the same happy-go-lucky dog, probably even more so. Emmie's surgery is going to cost approximately $1,500.
Emmie is the quintessential hound. She has eyes that convey great joy and curiosity, her ears are ridiculously large compared to the rest of her, she absolutely loves the company of other dogs and people, and she loves to run until her hearts content. And like most hounds, Emmie has a high degree of cuddlicity - in other words, she will make herself small enough to fit into that tiny space next to you on the couch or that 1 inch of open bed space. She loves to cuddle. Emmie is thin and will probably gain another 10 - 15 pounds, but even then she will still carry her lithe frame with grace.and the occasional puppy clumsiness that she's still trying to figure out. Emmie can be a tad shy when first approached, especially by new people, but she quickly realizes that they just want to fawn all over her and she loves that.
Emmie evokes feelings of great joy in her foster parents as she realizes what it's like to be a real dog with a loving home. Each day, she realizes new happiness in a ball or a bone or a stick in the yard. She is not very adept yet at basic commands. However, she is crate trained, 90% housetrained, and working on "sit". She doesn't have a lot of experience with leash walking and right now, she's very hesitant, but with time and confidence, she will master this along with other basic commands.
Emmie would mesh well in just about any household. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs, but loves people equally. So she would do well in a multi-dog household or as an only dog. To our knowledge, she does not have experience with children or cats. Because of her shy nature, she would do best in a home with children older than 6. And because hounds have a high prey drive, she will need to be tested with cats before placing her in a home with cats. Above all else, Emmie is looking for love, stability and companionship. With the investment of time and patience by her adopters, Emmie will return the favor with great devotion and love.
